Chapter 10

The Santi Estate was not a bustling hub of activity like Waystar Academy. On the average day there were a couple dozen staff, guards, dignitaries and retainers roaming the halls. On special occasions that number tripled. Today however the flood of people was on a whole other scale. The halls were complete chaos, but one thing stood out to Lucas more than the amount of people.

He didn’t see a single one of the family retainers or guards. Not a single one.

Which meant they were preparing to defend the estate. Third-floor balcony. That’s where they’d be.

“Excuse me,” mumbled Lucas for the hundredth time before he finally broke free form the rush of people flooding the hallway. He stumbled into the stairwell and ran up to the third floor as fast as he could. By the time he reached the top his legs were burning but he didn’t bother slowing down. There was no time to waste. He had to see for himself what was going on.

More important, he had to make sure the retainers weren’t playing into Keller’s plan. Whatever that plan was. He had to trust that he could figure it out. When he burst onto the balcony, he was blinded by the midday sun.

He threw his hand up to block out the sun and tried to find Sir Ducane, the head security at the estate.

“If you can’t relay simple orders, I’ll give command to Drugan,” snapped William then he turned away from Ducane to see who burst through the doors.

“Uncle,” said Lucas as he jogged over to him.

William rocked back a step, “Lucas, I was getting worried. Where’s Magnus Creed?”

“I left him back at Waystar,” said Lucas.

“Good, farther the better,” said William then his face hardened as he turned to look at Sir Ducane, “Deploy the guards, pull the rest of the retainers back. Now.”

“If you insist,” said Ducane with a dip of his head, “But they cannot repel a herd of this size.”

“I’ll heard you the first time,” said William.

Ducane lowered his head a second time, this time more deeply, “Understood.”

Lucas waited for him to jog off to relay his uncle’s orders, “What happen?”

William rubbed his shoulder then worked his arm as if his muscles were sore, “I believe I should be asking you that.”

Lucas forced himself to swallow, “I… well we… We got ambushed.”

“I said I should. It was not actually a question,” said William then he turned to look out over the walls of the estate, “I do want to hear the details, but now is not the time.”

“What’s happening?” asked Lucas then he felt the tension in his chest ease and let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.

“Two minutes ago, the estate’s proximity alarm was triggered,” answered William.

“So, a wild monster wondered too close,” said Lucas, “Why do all this?”

“The alarm triggered over seven thousand times,” said William as he pointed at the surrounding countryside, “But what do you see?”

Lucas scanned the horizon. Mostly he did it out of habit, but it gave him a few seconds to process the new piece of information.
